Funniest Day of My Life!

Describe one of your favorite moments.

Last June in Scotland was a pleasant surprise for this heat-sensitive Indian. Scotland’s constant breeze turned out to be just what I needed, both physically and spiritually, after being used to India’s relentless weathers served on a platter by the virtue of her excellent geographical position.

Once classes ended, the dissertation season began just as Scotland started heating up. My room, with its carpeted floors and windows that barely opened, turned into a sauna. While everyone else was melting, I felt like I was evaporating. I hastily emailed reception, warning of fainting spells and mentioning migraine-inducing temperatures. Their reply? The heating had been off for months; blame it on the rising mercury, they said. Before I could protest, I passed out—not from the heat, mind you, but from pulling an all-nighter.

When the porter, alerted by my dramatic email, knocked on my door, I was out cold—literally and figuratively too knocked out to respond. He used his master key, entered, and found me sprawled awkwardly, one leg & hand hanging down the edge of my bed, probably with my mouth open. His loud “Are you there?” while moving hand around my nose to check if I was alive woke me up but also had me stifling laughter. Poor Mr. Porter thought I’d succumbed to the heat and actually fainted. After a quick check of the room temperature, he advised me to contact reception if I had “any problems.” I made a point about global warming which he conveniently ignored like others of his age, the baby-boomers. So I promptly ordered a table fan as soon as he left and thankfully lived to tell the tale.

Love,

P
